Britain Detains Free Speech Advocates Under Terrorism Laws
As Americans, we may find this somewhat difficult to understand, but in the rest of the western world, there is no such thing as a legal protection for freedom of speech.
Certainly, there is a natural, God-given, unalienable right to speak freely. But in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Western Europe, the right to freedom of speech is not recognized by law in the same we we’ve come to enjoy.
That can be quite a shock to Americans traveling abroad. Indeed, it has been a heck of a shock to many English people who are being arrested for posting non-politically correct opinions on social media pages.
The freedom of speech may not be the law outside of the United States, but it is an inherent part of the spirit of English Common Law, which the law in the US and other countries with Anglo heritage is based on. We tend to feel that people have the right to speak as long as they are not inciting a riot or contributing to criminality in some way. But, there is a rising tide against this feeling.
It is a politically motivated tide that is being put forth by people who want to control what you think and say. They believe they have a monopoly on what is right and wish to shut down everyone who thinks differently to them. And that is a very generous appraisal — because there is plenty of reason to believe this is just a simple grab for political power.
Recently, two political commentators were held by English Customs under laws designed to curb terrorism. Gavin McInnes and CRTV have the story below.
