The Democratic Party has committed to fighting President Donald Trump on every single policy. When it comes to border security, though, Democrats are especially combative, refusing to do anything to help the president secure our nation’s borders and going as far as to prolong a government shutdown in order to avoid funding the border wall.
Democrats are relying on the short-term memory of their base to support the notion that they have always been in favor of open borders and have always held the belief that illegal immigration is not a real problem. The truth is, though, that it wasn’t that long ago when prominent members of the Democratic Party recognized the importance of border security.
Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and others all used to stand up in front of Congress and deliver speeches about the consequences of illegal immigration and the importance of securing our borders. Then along came Donald Trump, who ran largely on the platform of border security. All of a sudden, opposing Trump became the Democratic Party’s number one objective, and fighting against border security was just one more way to meet that goal. The fact that fighting against border security allows Democrats to paint conservatives as hateful xenophobes was just an added bonus.
However, the internet has a long memory, and videos of a time when Democrats held a very different stance on border security are easy to find.
