Don’t Be Fooled — Nike’s Kaepernick Move is Going to Backfire

Most of the time, major companies do their best to avoid controversy. By bringing on Colin Kaepernick as one of the spokespersons for their “Just Do It” campaign, Nike has embraced controversy with open arms.

It’s certainly a questionable business decision given that Colin Kaepernick was single-handedly responsible for setting off a chain of events that has tanked the NFL’s viewership and thus their profits. A track record such as that doesn’t exactly scream spokesperson material, especially since Kaepernick has accomplished little else of any significance during his time as an NFL quarterback.

Nevertheless, Nike is standing by their decision in spite of the immediate backlash that ensued. #BoycottNike was trending on Twitter the day of the announcement, and videos began popping up online of people destroying their Nike apparel in protest.

It isn’t just the fact that Colin Kaepernick has been brought on as a spokesperson for Nike that has people up in arms – it’s also the slogan that the company is publishing along with his picture. “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” is the quote underneath Kaepernick’s photo in the new ad, which has led many to question what it is exactly that Colin Kaepernick – the multimillionaire NFL quarterback – has sacrificed. When compared to the police officers and military members that his actions have disgraced, Colin Kaepernick has sacrificed nothing at all.

Despite all of this, Nike’s sales have jumped since the stunt. However, things might not look so great for the company in the long term…
