‘Morning Joe’ Panel Stumped by Free Speech on Campus

The liberal commentators on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ panel struggled to make sense of the growing free speech movement led by powerful conservative speakers like Ben Shapiro.

Shapiro is a Jewish American who graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles and Harvard law school, both very liberal schools, where the conservative view is often mocked and shunned. Regardless, the popular podcaster emerged from both as a staunch conservative armed with his own views on such subjects as affirmative action, transgenders, abortion, and more.

The question of free speech on college campuses became a subject of hot debate after his recent speech at U C Berkeley. While most people agree that as Americans we do have the right to free speech, there is the question of what university leaders should allow students to be subjected to on their watch.

Shapiro is a skilled speaker, political commentator, columnist, author, radio talk show host and editor-in-chief of the Daily Wire. His view is that he should be able to speak against (and for) any social, political or cultural issue he pleases.

It is true that students at large universities as well as private Liberal Arts colleges are constantly being introduced to different ideas, there are some who believe that students should be protected from speech that harms and/or challenges their right to be on campus and beneficiaries of scholarships and aid such as those who benefit from programs such as affirmative action.
