Reality Check: There is No Such Thing as ‘Free’ Healthcare

If a character in a film were to say, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch,” he would have to be either a grumpy old man or some coked up capitalist. That’s because we’ve been brainwashed to believe that having realistic ideas about equity makes a person stingy. This is wrong.

The truth is that nothing is free. Even the act of breathing consumes energy and causes wear and tear on the body. Every innovation, every act of engineering, every adjustment to a system causes some loss in some area.

Consider your living space as an example. Maybe you move a chair, hang a shelf, or adjust the lighting. You do this to gain an advantage that you desire, at the cost of some factor which you desire less. The factor you desire less does not have to be something negative — it is usually just a positive that you favor to a smaller degree.

When it comes to the economy, adjustments like this can be made by people voluntarily — or they can be made by governments by taxation and redistribution. But forcible taxation is theft. Because a government has nothing of its own other than the power to use force — anything they do must be funded by taxation.

For this reason, when politicians promise to give you anything, they are planning to steal it from someone else. This is typically justified through wedge issues. We’re told one class of person is less worthy than another- and we can steal from them. But this is evil, always.

Here’s Yaron Brook with more.
