In a shocking upset, 28-year-old socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently defeated the fourth-ranking House Democrat Joe Crowley in the New York Democratic primary.
It’s an upset that the Democratic Party has celebrated – both due to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s identity as a Latina woman and her embrace of socialism. Yet, it’s an upset that should leave any truly patriotic American deeply concerned.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s victory in New York is a symptom of a broader movement within the Democratic party and the United States at large. In an effort to distance themselves from the failed era of Obama and Clinton, the Democratic Party has quickly shifted further and further to the left — so much so that socialists such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have become the new face of the party.
Of course, the dangers that socialist policies present to the nation are numerous and severe. One needn’t look any further than the people starving on the streets of Venezuela to see first-hand the results that socialism yields. Unfortunately, if we continue to elect politicians such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the disastrous consequences of socialism will be brought to center-stage in a nation that has fought so hard throughout history to combat socialist and communist powers.
