The elites in Europe are quaking in their boots because it looks as if the “Trump effect” is now spreading around the globe.
Italy’s parliamentary elections during the first week in March saw massive upsets by brand new political parties which could best be described as “Italy First” parties. In fact, these upstart parties were so successful in the elections, that the parliament has not been able to form a majority coalition, at least not yet.
The 5 Star Movement party was the biggest upset of Italy’s contest, with 32 percent of the vote. 5 Star’s political platform mainly involves calling out the corruption of the establishment parties in Italy. Sound familiar?
The La Lega party was another shocker, taking in 20 percent of vote to surpass Italy’s version of the Democratic Party. La Lega’s platform is highly pro-Italy, and its candidates want a moratorium on the massive numbers of immigrants and so-called refugees flooding into the country from North Africa and the Middle East. Sound familiar?
It definitely sounds familiar to the unelected bureaucrats at the European Union, who feel their control slipping away from them. There are even rumblings of a possible “Italexit” vote in the near future, to follow on the heels of the successful 2016 Brexit vote in Great Britain.
Conservative commentator Mark Steyn understands the ins and out of European politics better than most. Watch the following clip where Steyn explains why Italian voters are so fed up with their establishment elites.
