The Truth About Migrant Kids Being Separated from their Parents

For the past several days, the entirety of the left has been in a state of outrage over Trump’s supposed policy of separating families who are caught crossing the border illegally. The media has painted this policy as an act of monstrosity that is entirely in Trump’s control to continue or to end as he sees fit. The truth, however, is not nearly so black and white.

To understand what’s happening on the border, it’s important to realize the law surrounding children who cross the border illegally. Current US law states that children who cross the border illegally – whether they cross alone or with their families – cannot be detained for longer than 20 days. This is the same law that was in place under the Obama administration and the one that Trump is forced to work with today.

What this law means is that when a family of illegal immigrants is caught crossing the border illegally, either the entire family must be released after 20 days – making it impossible to prosecute illegals and therefore impossible to curb illegal immigration – or the children must be released while the rest of the family is still detained.

There’s no denying that the situation is unfortunate, yet it is a choice that illegal immigrants make when they break the law by entering the country illegally – the same choice that any other criminal makes when they commit a crime and are separated from their children by being sent to prison. In a nation of laws, upholding the law is the only option that Trump or any other President has.
