Many of the freedoms we take for granted today were given to us by thinkers in the United Kingdom centuries ago. While freedom of speech is not a protected right in England, it is a universal western value. Here in the United States, our natural right to freedom of speech is protected. Sadly, the U.S. is the only country on Earth where this basic human right is protected by law.
The Founding Fathers were not the only men to understand the value of freedom of speech, but they were the only men with the experience, the wisdom, and the power to enshrine it in law. They had direct experience with tyranny. They knew the dangers that went hand in hand with the temptations that come with power. They also understood that no one person, no matter how intelligent, good-willed, or well-educated does not have all of the answers. Therefore, they devised a system of government that was dependent on debate and intellectual conflict.
Through constant political debate, the Founders intended that the Union would be best served by the collective wisdom of society, rather than be transformed into a totalitarian state by a single ideologue or a small group of them. Our political system has restricted the ability of our government to trample on the rights of the individual- the ultimate minority.
But this is only possible when our freedom of speech is protected. Today, in England, we are seeing the horrors that can occur when free speech is not protected.
