Understanding the “Ocasio-Cortez Effect” We’re All Seeing Now

When New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez published her “Green New Deal” – a proposal that, among other things, calls for banning “farting cows” and expanding welfare to anyone who is able but “unwilling” to work, she reached a new low of ignorance. For a woman who has already set the bar so low through almost every single comment she has ever made, this is truly an astonishing accomplishment.

And yet, Ocasio-Cortez’s support continues to grow, particularly among millennials. This is the “Ocasio-Cortez effect” – the more outrageous and extreme that she becomes, the more her base likes her. They don’t seem to care about the feasibility or even the impact of her promises. The only thing that matters is that those promises are big, different, and enticing.

Ocasio-Cortez is a product of the entitlement culture, taught to believe that she can accomplish anything she wants to no matter how ludicrous it might be. Her supporters, likewise, are a product of their upbringing – taught to base judgments on their emotions rather than critical thinking. The result is a woman who should have never been elected to office now in a position to rise even further up the ranks of the Democratic Party.

While it’s entertaining for those of us with logic and reasoning to laugh at Ocasio-Cortez, it’s important to realize that millions of voters in America aren’t laughing – they are taking her and her dangerous ideas very seriously.
