Venezuela is a point of contention for many progressives that wish they could sweep the downfall of the country under the rug. After all, it’s difficult to argue that socialism presents a bright future for the United States when citizens of the most recent country to try it are starving to death under a tyrannical government.
Rather than accept the obvious reality that socialism has failed miserably in Venezuela, though, many on the left continue to remain at least somewhat supportive of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his socialist government. They certainly aren’t supporting his opposition, Juan Guaidó, and even bashed President Donald Trump when he recognized Guaidó as the rightful leader of Venezuela — along with virtually every other western country.
Disagreeing with everything Trump says and does is the left’s favorite pastime, but this time it’s personal. Venezuela is proof that socialism and the results that it brings are just as terrible today as they were in the 20th century. This leaves Democrats who support socialism with two options – admit that it failed the people of Venezuela in the worst possible way, or put on rose-colored glasses and pretend the problems aren’t that bad. Many Democrats have chosen the latter option.
