The first half of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding the sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh didn’t go so well for Republicans. Understandably hesitant about how prodding and questioning an alleged sexual assault victim would play out on national TV, Republicans on the committee were hesitant in their questioning of Dr. Ford and delegated all of their questions to a female sex crimes prosecutor — who handled Dr. Ford with kid gloves.
Once Brett Kavanaugh took the stand, though, the tone of hearing changed dramatically, and the Republican senators grew far bolder. Much of that, though, is thanks largely in part to the fiery speech by Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Sen. Graham called out Democrats for their handling of the accusations, decried the manner in which they had treated both Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford throughout the process, and overall lit a fire under other Republicans at the hearing while at the same time backing Democrats into a corner.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Lindsey Graham’s speech completely changed the nature of the hearing, and his speech was by far one of the biggest moments of the day. If Brett Kavanaugh survives this brutal process and is confirmed to the Supreme Court, it’ll be thanks in no small part to the backbone and passion of Sen. Lindsey Graham.
