When Donald Trump ran for President in 2016, he sparked a movement. Trump is certainly not a typical President, and 2016 was not a typical election. We’re living in different times, now, and people can no longer be easily divided into Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative.
Instead, what we’re seeing is a massive voting block that is fed up with Washington DC and politicians on both sides of the aisle. As an outsider that promised to “drain the swamp” and a bulldozer of a figure who promised to dismantle the status quo, Donald Trump became the perfect man to represent this growing resentment and dissatisfaction.
Now, almost two years into his Presidency, a new poll shows that more voters align with Trump and his policies than they do with the GOP at-large. Donald Trump may be a Republican, but he does not represent the establishment GOP any more than he represents the Democratic Party. Instead, he represents a group of people that are tired of the incompetence and unfulfilled promises from both parties.
What this will mean for the GOP going forward is something that is yet to be seen. Hopefully, it will mean that they go back to working for the people, fighting for the middle class, and returning to the policies that once earned them support.
